This is a little different for me this morning, I think, but here goes..
Carnations and roses. If someone offers you a choice between a carnation and a rose, which would you choose? They’re both beautiful and come in various colours and sizes. Those of us who chose the rose, good for you! It is a thing of beauty, with a lovely fragrance most of the time. It has soft velvety petals that you want to brush against your cheek. Regal in it’s beauty and held in high esteem, it stands strong in the floral world. Get closer ….opps…thorns that are painful to the touch so you can’t get too close. Take it home, place it in your best crystal vase in water, outside of its original environment and in a few days it begins to wither. You change the water, but soon it gets cloudy and sometimes has a bad odour. It begins to wither, and you realize quite soon that the beauty is gone, and you throw it out.
Back to the store and, well, let’s choose the carnation. You spent your best dollars on the roses already. You get the colour that attracts you most. Go home, pull out a vase, doesn’t matter which one. Literally drop the flowers in it, no arrangement needed, after all it’s just carnations. No great scent but it looks alright. Days pass. A week goes by. Then another and they’re still standing strong, holding their beauty, a little worn but barely showing it. The colour is still strong. The water is going down but you don’t notice until the edges of the petals start to die. You may at this point add water until they finally give out. ‘Good run’ you think but as expected it didn’t last. Time for more Roses.
How many of us choose life partners like this; The beautiful thing that we choose fades fast even though we invest our best in it. Then we turn to something we think less of but that thing gives us longlasting benefits, sustains it’s beauty for as long as it’s cared for, asking very little. But forget to feed that relationship giving it any old thing and taking it for granted. It will only hold for so long without withering and dying of hunger.
So…what will be your choice?
